Born in Jamaica to a high-ranking military family, John Barnes scored one of the most memorable England goals of all time - yet he is viewed more as a great talent gone to waste rather than as simply a great talent. At club level, his play at the height of his career was matchless; his effortless control, touch and craft uniquely earned him back-to-back Footballer of the Year titles in 1988 and  1989 as well as two League titles, the FA Cup and the League Cup with Liverpool. But, that wonderful solo effort against Brazil in the Maracana aside, he never quite pulled it off for England, thereby frustrating fans and managers alike. Later, Barnes moved to Newcastle, under the managership of former team-mate Kenny Daglish. Ironically, John Barnes played as a winger before eventually finding his métier in the mid-field where he shone for team and country throughout the late 1980s and 1990s. Barnes as now moved to managerial success with Celtic teaming up again with the Director of Football of Celtic FC Kenny Daglish.
