Glittering individual skills and a devastating turn of pace have Gheorghe Hagi a big favourite with the fans at every club he has played for. He appeared for Romania's youth team at 15, was a Top Division player at 17 and a full international a year later. After finishing as the League's leading scorer two years running (1985-6), he was forcibly transferred to the "state" club, Steaua Bucharest, at the demand of the Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausecu. A star performance in the 1990 World Cup tournament earned him a £2M move to Real Madrid.
