Famed as much for his habitual long shorts as for his tremendous goalkeeping skills, Sepp Maier was a frustrated tennis player who discovered that he was better at saving balls than serving them. He enjoyed a 19-year career with Bayern Munich, during which time he played in just under 500 League matches, 422 of them consecutively. Also noted for the large gloves that he wore, Maier was a member of West Germany's squad for four World Cups, from 1966 to 1978. Later he opened a tennis school to indulge his first love.
