Sandro Mazzola chose to play with Internazionale to avoid the shadow of his father Valentino, who had been Italy's and Torino's captain; Valentino has died in the 1949 Superga air crash when Sandro was six. The younger Mazzola played successfully as an inside forward and a centre-forward. He appeared 70 times for Italy, despite being rivalled by Luigi Riva. He made his international debut at the age of 20.
