The son of Italian parents living in Belgium, Scifo decided to take up Belgium citizenship just in time to allow him to take part in the 1984 European Championship in France. A cultured mid-fielder with delightful passing skills and an eye for the goal, he helped Torino's to the 1992 UEFA Cup Final before Torino's accountants sold him to Monaco to help balance their books.
