England's captain through three World Cups (1950, 1954 and 1958), Wright won a total of 105 caps for his country, 90 as skipper. Not a naturally gifted player, he worked hard and led by example, showing good positional sense, waspish tackling and power in the air. Initially a wing-half, he moved into central defence for his 60th international, England v Switzerland, and was a revelation. A real-life Boys' Own hero, Wright completed his "perfect life" by marrying Joy, the ldest of the Beverley Sisters. Less successful as a manager of Arsenal, he moved into broadcasting. He died in 1994.
